Philip Needham, nato in Inghilterra nel 1951, risiede nel comune di Monte Santa Maria Tiberina, in provincia di Perugia, dal 2002.
Ha studiato all'università di Cardiff in Galles, dopo la laurea in fisica ha proseguito con un dottorato di ricerca.
Ha lavorato come insegnante per 25 anni, soprattutto a Londra, alla Westminster School. Ha iniziato la sua carriera come insegnante di fisica e matematica per passare poi all'insegnamento della tecnologia e infine del teatro. Nei suoi ultimi anni alla Westminster School ha promosso e coordinato l'allestimento di un teatro stabile per la scuola inaugurato nel 2001 con la messa in scena di "Dido e Aeneas" di Purcell e "Curlew River" di Britten.
Come regista si è concentrato particolarmente sull'opera di Shakespeare e sul melodramma.
Dopo il suo trasferimento in Umbria ha ripreso a dipingere. Il suo genere eclettico varia dallo stile figurativo a quello astratto.

He read Physics at the University of Cardiff, Wales, following a degree with a research programme leading to a PhD.
After University he worked as a teacher for 25 years, mostly in London, at Westminster School. His teaching career began in Maths and Physics changing through Technology to Drama. As Director of Drama his main focus was Shakespeare and opera. During his last years he oversaw the development of a dedicated theatre at Westminster, opening it in 2001, with a double bill of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Britten's Curlew River.
Since leaving teaching and moving to Umbria he has transferred his artistic energies to painting, working in an eclectic range of styles from representational to abstract.
